The ‘Man Utd way’ – what is it, and are we seeing it under Ten Hag?

Philosophy has become one of the footballing buzzwords in recent years.
It is the idea that clubs, and head coaches, must have a clearly defined style they are playing with or aspiring towards. Almost every European club philosophises the same thing: high possession, attack-first and press high.
“I can’t play like Ajax play — it is different players, so I came here with my philosophy, based on possession,” Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag said this week.
“But I wanted to combine it with the DNA of Manchester United and the players, the characters of them.”

Ten Hag is something of an outlier compared to other managers asked to restore United to their former glories since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
The Dutchman is not a charismatic speaker in the same way his predecessors Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were but has built a reputation for his tactical plans, as well as his willingness to explain his fabled process of improvement for the club.
